Learn First aid mutual activityPart of the Mutual Program in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is to teach the youth life skills. A class favourite is always the Mutual First Aid Activity. Maybe because we get to wrap each other up in Bandages and learn a life skill that may one day save someone’s life.

Mutual First Aid Training Topics Ideas:

  • Asthma attack
  • Bites and stings
  • Bleeding
  • Burns and Scalds
  • Broken Bones
  • Dislocations
  • Electric shock
  • Shock
  • Snake Bites
  • Spider Bites

And the list goes on. There are many places on the net to find First Aid Help, but a great online tool is the St Johns Website First Aid Facts. Here you can view and download topics to help you with teaching the class.Following the guides is simple and you can even get each of the youth to research one topic and share what they have learnt.

Role Playing:

Once you have taught some basic skills, its a great Idea to do some role playing. You can describe some different scenarios of accidents or injuries, and what steps the first aider would take to help the injured person. This gets them used to the idea of following the DRABC +D methods.

  • D: Danger
  • R: Response
  • A: Airway
  • B: Breathing
  • C: Circulation
  • D: Defibrillator

Simple cards printed out before hand with scenarios may include Ideas like. Falling off Bike and breaking arm. How do we deal with this accident? Can really reinforce the principles taught in this Mutual First Aid Activity. There may also be a Nurse, Doctor or Occupational First Aider in the Ward that may like to help out with this activity.

Remember to bring plenty of bandages, and some triangle bandages to make slings. If you dont have these items they can be cut out from a large old bed sheet.
